HI SHANGHAI
Lane houses are a form of residential buildings that were born during modern China.  Shanghai is the earliest city in China to have lane houses. The earliest lane houses were derived from the traditional countryard houses in the South of Yangtze River.

The layout planning of the houses absorbed the style of European townhouses, thus forming a style that blends Chinese and Western styles.

The gates of the earliest generation of lane houses consisted of three large stone bars surrounding two black painted wooden gates. The lane houses with this kind of gates are called by Shanghainese "Shikumen".
